Flowdock For iPhone Gets Push Notifications & 1-To-1 Messages

Flowdock iPhone Push Notifications

Lately, we’ve been putting plenty of work into the Flowdock iPhone app. It’s now more streamlined and touts a couple of awesome new features: Push notifications & 1-to-1 conversations.

Push Notifications

Push notifications have been highly requested for the iPhone app, and now they’ve been added. Once enabled, you’ll receive a push notification whenever someone mentions your name in a flow or sends you a 1-to-1 message. You’ll never miss a message you want to see. Simply download or upgrade your iOS app and start it up to enable push notifications.

1-To-1 Messaging

The feature is fully packed with photo uploads and all. The UI now gives you two sections, one for your flows and another for your 1-to-1 conversations.

Other platforms

Flowdock’s web app works great with most modern mobile browsers. You can simply point your mobile browser to flowdock.com/app to access on the go.

As always, we love to hear your feedback.

Flowdock iOS App Now Available On The App Store

June 19th, 2012

Flowdock available on the App Store We are happy to tell you that the official Flowdock iOS app is now available on the App Store. The app lets you tap into your Flowdock flows on your device and works on any iOS device running iOS 5.0 or newer. You can chat with your teams, upload photos using your camera and scroll into history to keep up with discussions.

Two major things you can expect coming into the iOS app are push notifications and team inbox support. Later we’ll bring in searching and filtering plus tagging support.

Flowdock iOS App Internals

To give you a peek under the hood of the Flowdock app, let’s take a look at a fairly new player in the iOS development platform game, AppGyver, now taking on against the likes of PhoneGap and several others.

AppGyver provides a WebView-driven JavaScript context to create iPhone apps using multiple WebViews and combining them with native features such as navigation stack, document previews, native transitions and nice fine-tunings like momentum scrolling to break you away from the run-of-the-mill HTML5 apps.

Our app is written in CoffeeScript and we use Backbone models in conjunction with the Flowdock API to move data around.

Major painkillers in AppGyver’s development flow include things like completely Xcode-less cloud builds and real-time in-device and simulator previews. They already have Android support in the works, too (shush!).

We have developed the Flowdock app in close cooperation with the AppGyver guys. To get a better idea on how it’s built, also take a look at the AppGyver API Docs and of course try the Flowdock app itself, to check how smooth the scrolling actually is.

Have fun chatting on the go and let us know any and all feedback you have!

Flowdock Mobile Beta Out Now

March 23rd, 2011

Flowdock icon on iPhone If there is one more thing an app built for teams needs, it’s a mobile client. To be able to tap into the hive mind of your team, regardless of where you are, is just golden. Long story short, Flowdock mobile Beta is out now! Just head on to https://flowdock.com/flows on your device to try it out. (Haven’t signed up yet? Go here first.)

How Does It Work?

A couple of months ago, when we started development for the mobile web experience of Flowdock, we decided early on that jQuery Mobile will be our platform of choice. It made perfect sense, since we’re widely using jQuery already and the mobile project has such major traction.

Even though jQuery Mobile is still in alpha stages, we were able to implement a wonderful experience which not only gives a very native app feeling on the most advanced platforms like iOS or Android, but also works very nicely on the plethora of devices supported by jQuery Mobile, including any device capable of running Opera Mobile (recommended option on e.g. Symbian).

The result is amazing! We’ve prepared a short video (under 1 minute!) which quickly showcases what the app looks like.

The device configurations in the beginning sequence are (left-to-right):

  • Samsung Galaxy S running the native browser on Android 2.2
  • iPhone 4 running Safari on iOS 4.3
  • Nokia E51 running Opera Mobile on S60 Symbian OS v9.2

For now the mobile app includes just the chat, but we’re already working hard to bring you more features on the mobile.
